What inspired you to become a mentor at Lumera?
I was inspired to become a mentor at Lumera to help shape our company culture and support the growth of new employees. It's a rewarding opportunity for personal development and allows me to pass on knowledge to the next generation at Lumera. I've always enjoyed teaching others, and mentoring gives me the chance to contribute more to our future talents.

What do you enjoy most about mentoring new colleagues?
I mostly enjoy the new perspectives that mentoring adds to my work. Discussing projects with new colleagues not only broadens my views but also enriches our workplace with diverse insights. Additionally, mentoring is a great way to meet and connect with various team members across Lumera.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement you've had with a mentee at Lumera?
A standout moment was when I experienced my mentee working independently for the first time. Transitioning from guiding my mentee through every task to becoming a supportive resource was incredibly fulfilling and made me proud of my mentee’s growth and my accomplishment in my mentorship.

How do you help your mentees take ownership of their learning and professional development?
I allow them to lead on different cases and encourage them to tackle problems on their own before we discuss the solutions together. My strategy involves having more dialogues than monologues, motivating mentees to express their understanding of our work in their own words.

How do you support mentees in developing relationships across teams and becoming an integral part of Lumera?
I encourage mentees to connect with various people within the company and guide them on whom to approach and where to seek information. I also make sure that mentees don't sit alone but join larger groups for lunch, helping to build a more inclusive and collaborative environment.

In what ways does mentoring at Lumera benefit you as an experienced professional?
Mentoring provides self-growth opportunities. It exposes me to new perspectives in my areas of expertise which enhances my knowledge. Additionally, mentoring boosts my confidence in my own abilities and work. Realising that I can effectively mentor while managing my responsibilities, and witnessing a mentee develop into a competent colleague, strengthens my confidence and job satisfaction.

What advice would you give to new team members about making the most of the mentorship experience at Lumera?
My advice is to ask plenty of questions. Don't hesitate to ask anything that might seem trivial—there are no stupid questions. Instead of putting pressure on yourself to learn everything at once, fully utilise your mentor’s knowledge and guidance. Feel free to seek advice on any aspect of your work.
Additionally, I recommend connecting with other new employees and mentees. Collaborate on work tasks, solve problems together, or simply share a coffee break. Also, make an effort to join discussions with more experienced colleagues during breaks or around the office to broaden your understanding and integrate into the team.
